Top Ten Tuesday #2: Books On My Winter TBR List!

Every week The Broke and the Bookish hosts the Top Ten Tuesday. This week the topic is the top ten books that I am looking forward to reading this winter!

So here it is, my list! These are the books I am most excited to cuddle up with under a comfy blanket, with a nice cup of hot cocoa this winter season!

Love and Other Perishable Items  by Laura Buzo: I have been dying to read this! Definitely a book I cannot wait to cuddle up with as I feel like once I start reading it I won't be able to stop!

Dead Beautiful by Yvonne Woon: The third book in this series, Love Reborn, is coming out beginning of January so I would like to get caught up in time for the release!

The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson: The reviews on Goodreads for this book are great! It seems that everyone seems to love this book, and it sounds amazing! Definitely excited for this one!

Alice Brown's Lessons in the Curious Art of Dating by Eleanor Prescott: This sounds like such a fun read! A matchmaker with an impossible client.. could get interesting!

Girl, Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen: I have wanted to read this for so long! Finally going to get it, and then going to watch the movie with Angelina Jolie!

Severed: A Tale of Sleepy Hollow by Dax Varley: Always love a good retelling of Sleepy Hollow!

The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weinsberger: I read this years ago when the movie came out. I want to re-read it so that way I can read the sequel that came out recently!


Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella: Just bought this whole series at a second hand bookstore! Definitely starting as soon as possible.


The Betrayal of Natalie Hargrove by Lauren Kate: Looooved the Fallen series by her, so I am sure I will love this book also!

And finally..

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak: I CANNOT WAIT TO READ THIS! The movie looks absolutely amazing and I do not want to see the movie until after I read the book! I am currently number 33 on the wait list at my library, but they have 14 copies so hopefully it goes by fast!!!

It's hard to tell if she'll run out of time or money first, but either way, failure would mean facing the fact that she has absolutely no skills to make it in the real world. Her father wants her to come home and teach, her agent won't call her back, and her classmate Penelope, who seems supportive, might just turn out to be her toughest competition yet. 

Review: This book was definitely not one of my favourites to read. I just found it very hard to get into the book, and it just dragged at some points. I felt like there was a lot of story and dialogue, but nothing going on. I was just bored.

Also, I just did not enjoy the character of Franny as much as I would have liked. I found her to be kind of dumb actually. She had all these feelings and insticts about events and people, but she would never follow them! She just kept making excuses for why things were the way they were, or why she should keep dating some jerk. That is one of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to main female characters, I mean come on you know that you should not be doing that, SO DON'T DO IT.


I found myself craving more of Franny's roommates than I did her. I absolutely loved Jane, she is such a badass, funny, true character, and at times I wished she was my friend! And do not even get me started on Dan... gahhh I am in love!


The ending of this book was such a shock.. it left off at a huge cliffhanger! NOOOO! I need to know what happens! I am assuming she is planning on writing a sequel as she left so many things unanswered. And according to Goodreads, "Graham signed a deal with Warner Bros. Television and Ellen DeGeneres' production company A Very Good Production to adapt it into a TV series. The script will be written by her." I am excited for this as I feel it could make for a very nice TV show if the casting is done right.

All in all, it was not a horrible book, but I would try to rent it from a library or a friend before spending money on it.

Review: This book was a flashback to high school! The boy drama, the friend drama, the mean girl drama, this book has it all. I literally felt like i was reliving my senior year of high school all over again, but this time with Carrie Bradshaw as my best friend (I wish).

After watching the Sex and the City TV series and movies, I was extremely excited to see how Candace Bushnell would portray Carrie in her younger years, and she did not disappoint me one bit. I loved this look into Carrie's last year of high school before she goes on to tackle "The City".

The best part of this whole book though.. is the ending! Candace Bushnell leaves the story with Carrie getting in touch with none other than.. well you will just have to read it for yourself to see! But I will tell you this, it is one of the other main characters from Sex and the City. I cannot wait to read Summer and the City and see what adventures await young Carrie as she ventures to NY city for the first time!

Top Ten Tuesday #1: 2014 Most Anticipated Releases!

Every week The Broke and the Bookish hosts the Top Ten Tuesday. This week the topic is the top ten 2014 releases that I am dying to get my hands on!

So here is it.. my list in no particular order!

To All the Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han: I am super excited for this book it sounds like it will be a very fun and cute story. Plus I love Jenny Han's Summer series!

Isla and the Happily Ever After  by Stephanie Perkins: Words cannot even begin to describe how excited I am for this book! Anna and the French Kiss is definitely one of my most favourite books ever!

Landline by Rainbow Rowell: I have just started reading Rainbow Rowell's novels, and I cannot get enough! I am sure this book will not disappoint either!

 

Second Star by Alyssa B. Sheinmel: This is a retelling of Peter Pan.. enough said!!

Bleed Like Me by Christa Desir: I am excited for this one because it is so different from what I normally read! I have only read a couple contemporary novels before and loved them, and I am excited to see what this one has to offer!

Say What You Will by Cammie McGovern: I have really been into the not-your-usual romance books lately, and it seems to me that this is exactly what this will end up being!

The Art of Lainey by Paula Stokes: I have been really into these romantic comedies lately, and this one sounds absolutely perfect!


How to Meet Boys by Catherine Clark: I have a feeling that this will be the perfect beach read for next summer!


Royally Lost by Angie Stanton: Romance in Europe.. no need to say anything else!!

And last, but certainly not least:

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart: OMG! A suspense novel from E. Lockhart?! I cannot wait to get my hands on this! I am obsessed with her Ruby Oliver series, and I just know that this book will be amazing!!

Review: I cannot put into words how much I absolutely adored this book. What starts off as a night to forget all her troubles, ends up being the night that will cause Lucy trouble and suffering for the rest of her life. This is a heartbreaking story of a young girl's struggle to come to terms with the effects that one mistake will have on the rest of her life.

My favourite part of this book was definitely the characters. Every single one of them was completely relatable, and their actions and reactions towards Lucy were so real that I felt like these were my own friends. I felt and shared Lucy's pain with her, and my heart broke for her. Lucy for me is everything that a main female character should be. She was real, strong, independent, and absolutely lovable.

This book is definitely one of the best YA books I have read, and I completely recommend it to all young women.

A New Blog

My name is Amanda Lee, and I am a 22 year old daydreamer. I come from a small town in New England, and I am currently in college to become a nurse. When I am not studying for exams, or doing homework, I can usually be found curled up in bed with a cup of tea and either a novel or some crochet project.
I tend to read mostly YA fiction and science fiction novels, although occasionally I will branch out and read different genres (romance novels are definitely a guilty pleasure of mine). I was very intrigued by the Book Blogging Community when I first set up my Goodreads account, as it seems to be filled with fantastic people, and lots of fun! I have finally decided to go for it and start blogging with them! I am very excited to share my love of reading with others, and meet people who love books just as much as I do!!
